Police in Mbarara district are investigating how a police officer shot dead a 45-year-old man who attempted to attack the police officer on duty in trying to bring back stability in a threatened community.
The fatal incident occurred in Akatooma cell Kibingo parish Kagongi sub county Kashari north Mbarara district on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at around 7:00 am.
The District Polic\e Commander Mbarara SP Iren Esther Kayema confirmed the report saying the deceased identified as Tibagarukwamu Gerald 45 years old was shot dead when opened the door charged and armed with well-sharpened panga trying to kill the police officer.
Preliminary police, investigations reveal that the late Tibagarukwamu had been in hiding for over two weeks due to several debts accumulated from various financial service providers accompanied by pressure from those who stood surety.
DPC Kayema described the incident as bad as police continue to investigate the matter and in case the police officer made a mistake will be disciplined before courts of law.
DPC Kayema thanked the local leaders for cooperating with the police in giving information and maintaining peace and tranquility.
The Mbarara district council speaker Venansio Munanukye called upon the population to always document complaints and conflicts in the community and give the information to local leaders and police to handle such challenges in advance before they escalate to result in grief.
