Military delegations from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation during a Proximity Commanders’ Meeting held in Nyagatare District, Rwanda.

The UPDF 2nd Infantry Division team, led by Maj. Gen. Paul Muhanguzi, was warmly received at the Kagitumba One-Stop Border Post by Brig. Gen. Paskali Muhizi, Commander of RDF’s 5th Infantry Division.

At the opening ceremony held at Epic Hotel, Maj. Gen. Muhanguzi praised the RDF for their hospitality and emphasized the value of collaboration between the two armies.

Brig. Gen. Muhizi underscored the importance of high-level leadership in driving military cooperation.

As part of their itinerary, the UPDF delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Nyagatare District headquarters, where they met Vice Mayor Matsiko Gozanga. He highlighted the military’s role in implementing joint resolutions and expressed hope for deeper cross-border collaboration at the district level.

The two forces noted tangible progress in intelligence sharing, joint operations, and people-centered initiatives, such as a recent friendly football match in Ntungamo and community sensitization along the border.

The delegation will also visit the Mulindi Liberation Struggle Museum in Gicumbi District as part of continued engagements aimed at fostering mutual understanding.

Present at the meeting were senior officers, including Brig. Gen. Frank Mutembe (RDF 2nd Infantry Division), Brig. Gen. Dr. Emmanuel Shillingi (Uganda’s Defense Advisor to Rwanda), and Col. Emmanuel Ruzindana (Rwanda’s Defense Advisor to Uganda), as well as brigade commanders and intelligence officers from both sides.
