The Territorial Police in Rukungiri District have issued an update regarding the incident in which one pupil died and four others were injured after a school building wall collapsed during a windstorm at Rwerere SDA Nursery and Primary School in Rwerere Town Council.
According to the police spokesperson, ASP Maate Elly, the incident occurred on 16 April 2026 at around 1:30pm during the lunch break, when a strong windstorm struck the school premises. The storm caused part of a classroom wall to give way, falling onto five pupils who were taking lunch on the verandah.
Tragically, one pupil, identified as Ashaba Princess, aged 12, was pronounced dead while being rushed for medical attention. Four other pupils sustained injuries and were promptly rescued and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
The injured pupils include Abisnguza Emmanuel (8), Azahura Treasure (7), Ainembabazi Mercy (10), and Mugarura Onesmus (8). They were first taken to a private clinic before being referred for further management at Kambuga Hospital.
Police officers visited and documented the scene, and a death inquiry file was opened. The body of the deceased was taken to Buyanja Health Centre IV for postmortem examination.
ASP Maate Elly noted that preliminary findings point to structural weakness of the affected building, urging school administrators across the region to prioritize safety standards in school infrastructure to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
