Students at Mugyera Basin Secondary School (IMBASS) in Ngomba Parish, Rugarama East Sub County, Ntungamo District have been encouraged to apply environmental protection knowledge and skills acquired at school to promote a more resilient environment in collaboration with their parents and communities.

The call was made on 17th April 2026 by the school director during the annual Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) competitions held at the school. The event attracted vibrant performances from students competing in set pieces, poetry, plays, original compositions, mime, and both modern and traditional dance.

Students participated under four houses—Elgon, Rwenzori, Muhavura, and Kilimanjaro—with Muhavura House emerging overall winner under the theme “Protecting the environment for future benefits.”

Speaking at the event, the school director, Ivan Karabayi, raised concern over increasing environmental degradation, including water contamination caused by rains and the destruction of green vegetation, which he said is affecting community well-being. He urged students to take a leading role in environmental restoration by applying what they learn at school in their homes and communities.

Rev. Titus Tugume, the school chaplain, commended the institution for promoting Music, Dance and Drama, noting that such activities bring Christians closer to God, help reduce stress, and improve mental focus and life skills.

The adjudicator, Kashaija Cyril Turinawe, praised MDD for its role in rehabilitation, particularly for learners with disabilities, adding that it helps sharpen minds and builds alternative survival skills for the future.

The co-curricular activities teacher, Moneth Karugaba, highlighted the importance of MDD in empowering academically weaker students, saying it gives them confidence, a sense of belonging, and respect within the school community.

Participants Savious Ainembabazi and Major Amuntoranire expressed pride in taking part in co-curricular activities, saying they open up opportunities for future livelihoods and even access to bursaries in education.
