UPC President Jimmy Akena has officially announced his candidacy for the 2026 presidential elections. This declaration came during a crucial consultation session held in Kabale Municipality, where he met with party leaders from Kabale, Rukiga, and Rubanda districts in the Kigezi sub-region. This move is significant for UPC, as it marks their return to the presidential race after their last candidate ran in 2011 under the leadership of then-party president Olara Otunnu.
Speaking to UPC supporters in Kigezi, Akena outlined his vision for the nation, stressing the urgent need for improved public services. Leveraging his extensive political experience and understanding of Uganda’s political landscape, he expressed readiness to tackle the challenges of governance. Akena highlighted recent victories in bye-elections as proof of the party’s electoral strength, expressing confidence in replicating this success in the upcoming polls.
Responding to concerns about UPC’s neglect of the Kigezi sub-region, Akena acknowledged the difficulties faced by party members in the area. He attributed the decline in support to these challenges but committed to revitalizing the party’s presence by restructuring efforts, establishing regional offices, and prioritizing grassroots engagement.
Joined by key party officials and notable MPs, including UPC Secretary-General Ebil Fred and Principal Public Relations Officer Michael Orach Oside, Akena held a rally in Kabale town before inaugurating the Kigezi regional offices. This signals the beginning of UPC’s rejuvenation efforts in the region.
UPC’s current focus is on nationwide consultative meetings, with plans for the next session in Kitgum district. As Akena and his team embark on this journey, they aim to revitalize UPC, preparing for the 2026 general elections with renewed determination.
