Authorities in Rukungiri district are grappling with an outbreak of a disease resembling foot and mouth disease across various parts of the region.

Johnson Ninsiima, the district veterinary officer, informed our correspondent that this ailment has been observed in several areas including Buhunga, Nyakagyeme, Kebisoni town council, and both the western and eastern sections of Rukungiri Municipality.

He outlined the symptoms of the disease, such as mouth and foot lesions, bladder wounds, and urged livestock farmers in these affected regions to remain vigilant and promptly report any signs of illness in their animals.

Ninsiima mentioned that upon discovering the disease, they promptly notified the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries. Officials from the ministry subsequently collected samples from affected animals for testing, with results expected soon.

In response to the outbreak, preventive measures have been implemented including the regulation of animal movement between different areas. Additionally, efforts to curb illegal trading and unauthorized animal slaughtering have been intensified. Ninsiima emphasized the necessity for individuals to obtain clearance from veterinary authorities before relocating domestic animals.
