Inspector General of Government Betty Kamya has asserted that Uganda’s government loses an estimated 10 trillion shillings annually to corruption. Speaking to the residents of Bushenyi District at Kiziinda Playground, Kamya emphasized the importance of empowering communities to combat corruption.
She urged leaders to uphold integrity, honesty, and transparency in their service delivery to communities. Kamya highlighted the findings of a three-year study conducted by her office, which revealed that the country generates 28 billion shillings in domestic local revenues, representing approximately 46% of total revenue. Additionally, she noted that among the 38,000 government workers, 4,000 have access to public funds.
According to Kamya, corruption often originates from personal motivations, leading to the violation of laws and regulations. She stressed the significance of gathering comprehensive information, as her office faces challenges in prosecuting corrupt individuals.
Kamya is currently touring western districts such as Mbarara, Sheema, and Bushenyi, urging citizens to actively participate in the fight against corruption at the grassroots level.
