Women entrepreneurs in Uganda have been encouraged to prioritize networking as essential for success in their businesses. This advice was emphasized by Prof Moses Muhwezi, the principal of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), during a stakeholder’s consultative workshop held in partnership with the Ministry of Gender. The workshop aimed at developing a training curriculum tailored for women entrepreneurs from western districts and took place at Hotel Triangle in Mbarara city.
Prof Moses Muhwezi highlighted the significance of empowering women in business, stating that such empowerment contributes to overall family development.
Research conducted by Prof Moses indicates that 38 percent of businesses in Uganda are owned by women.
Dr. Dianah Nandagire Tamu, the Director of MUBS Entrepreneurship Innovation and Incubation Center, explained that MUBS has collaborated with the Ministry of Gender to support women entrepreneurs through the Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) project. The objective is to address the challenges faced by small women-owned businesses.
This initiative, funded by the World Bank to the tune of $217 million, in conjunction with the Private Sector in Uganda and the Ministry of Gender, aims to bolster the support for women entrepreneurs in the country.
