Police in Kanungu District have launched investigations into the suspected murder by poisoning of a one-year and nine-month-old girl, Kato Pauline, daughter of Oudira Tushabahurira, a resident of Mushunga Cell, Kiringa Parish, Kambuga Sub-county.
According to police, the tragic incident occurred on June 15, 2025, at around 8:30 a.m. Preliminary reports indicate that two days earlier, on June 13, the child had been playing at a neighbor’s home, identified as Sunday Fauster, who is now a key suspect. It is alleged that when the mother went to pick up her child, she found her ingesting a liquid from a bottle while the suspect looked on.
Shortly after returning home, the child developed serious medical complications. She was first taken to Kambuga Hospital and later referred to Bwindi Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on June 15.
The matter was reported to police on June 16. Investigators visited the scene, documented evidence, and recovered a white bottle containing a foul-smelling substance. A postmortem was conducted at Kambuga Hospital, and some organs were extracted for toxicological analysis at the Government Analytical Laboratory.
The suspect, Sunday Fauster, was reportedly attacked by a mob following the incident but was rescued by police and is currently receiving treatment at Kambuga Hospital under police guard.
Police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the ongoing investigations, stating that inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are underway.
