Kanungu territorial police have arrested two suspects in connection with the breaking into a store and theft of coffee and beans belonging to David Masiko Bitaka. The suspects, identified as Tumuhamye Ronald and Joy Ndyajunwoha, both residents of Nyamirambi Cell in Rugando Parish, Kyeshero Sub-county, are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

The incident occurred on the night of November 21, 2024. According to the victim, David Masiko, he discovered his store had been broken into and found that two sacks of dry coffee and three basins of beans were missing. He promptly reported the matter to Kyeshero Police Post, prompting swift action by the authorities.

The Officer in Charge requested the canine unit to assist in the investigation. Upon arriving at the scene, the police sniffer dog, “Prince,” was introduced to the scent. The well-preserved crime scene proved suitable for canine tracking. Prince led the officers approximately 250 meters to the home of Tumuhamye Ronald, where he stopped and sat, indicating the presence of stolen items.

A subsequent search of Ronald’s residence by detectives uncovered a small sack of dry coffee and scattered bean droppings. Under questioning, Ronald admitted to selling some of the stolen coffee to Joy Ndyajunwoha, a resident of the same village. Further police action at Ndyajunwoha’s home led to the recovery of two sacks of dry coffee.

The recovered items were exhibited as evidence, and both suspects were arrested. ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and assured the public that inquiries into the matter are ongoing.

“The prompt action by our canine unit and detectives demonstrates our commitment to combating theft and ensuring justice for victims. We urge residents to report any suspicious activities in their communities,” said ASP Maate.

The incident highlights the efficiency of the canine unit in tracking suspects and recovering stolen property. Police are advising residents to enhance security measures to protect their homes and property.

Further updates on the case will be provided as investigations progress.
