Tragedy struck in Kisoro District after a fatal road accident claimed two lives and left others injured in Rurangara village, Mupaka Town Council. The accident, which occurred on the night of March 1 at around 9:00 PM, involved a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UGD 294F, and a pedestrian along the Mwaro–Busiga feeder road.
According to police reports, the deceased have been identified as Mukanoheri Anastasia, 44, and Ntakirutimana Priscilla, 50, both residents of Kabaya village in Kisoro District. The two women were passengers on the ill-fated motorcycle when the crash occurred.
The other victims include Ntakisanayo Odira, a 17-year-old pedestrian from Rurangara village, who was injured, and the motorcycle rider, identified only as Vincent from Kabaya village, who fled the scene and remains at large.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the motorcycle was returning from a burial in Busigi and heading towards Nyarubuye at high speed. The rider, reportedly operating without headlights, collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the road, hitting her right leg. This caused the rider to lose control, resulting in a crash that instantly claimed the lives of the two female passengers.
Police officers, led by ASP Kushaba Michael from Kisoro District, responded to the scene, conducted a sketch map, and transported the bodies to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. The motorcycle has been impounded at Kisoro Central Police Station pending an inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Authorities have attributed the accident to reckless speeding and operating a motorcycle without headlights. Efforts to apprehend the fleeing rider are ongoing.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Maate Elly has urged all road users to exercise caution, especially at night, to prevent such tragedies.
