Rev. Father Barithzar Ndyomugabe, the Kabale Diocesan Spiritual Director and Coordinator of Inter-Religious Affairs in the Kigezi region, has urged the public not to mistake the Roman Catholic Church for idolizing symbols and portraits.

He made this appeal on Sunday, March 2, 2025, during his homily while presiding over the dedication and blessing of the Virgin Mother Mary of Legion Shrine, the unveiling of the St. Jerome statue, and the official opening of the administration block at St. Jerome Secondary School Ndama in Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri District. He was representing the Bishop of Kabale Diocese at the event.

Father Barithzar emphasized freedom of worship, criticizing those who oppose the use of portraits and statues, referring to them as individuals misleading others for personal gain. He compared religious symbols and portraits to family photos kept at home in remembrance of loved ones, explaining that, similarly, the Roman Catholic Church preserves images of its founders as a way to honor its religious heritage.

Peter Atwongyeire, the Vice Chairperson of the PTA, commended the school’s full equipment and readiness to provide quality education. He also praised the establishment of the Mother Mary shrine, noting that it meets high standards.

Alphonse Byamukama, the Head Teacher of St. Jerome Secondary School Ndama, expressed gratitude for the successful completion of the administration block, the St. Jerome statue, and the Virgin Mother Mary of Legion Shrine, which he believes will serve as a place of dedication for students.

Shallon Atukwatse, the Head Girl, expressed excitement over the opportunity to access the Mother Mary shrine, highlighting its significance in providing spiritual healing and blessings, especially for those who previously struggled to reach a similar place of worship within the church premises.
