Two individuals have been apprehended in Rukungiri in connection to the tragic demise of Derrick Niwahereza, an 18-year-old herdsman residing in Bugorogoro cell, Kyabugashe parish, Nyakagyeme sub-county, Rukungiri district.
The incident occurred on April 19, 2024, around noon at Kagashe cell, Bugangari parish/sub-county, Rukungiri district. The suspects are identified as, Asiimwe Amon, a 16-year-old herdsboy from Kinoni cell, Bugangari parish/sub-county, Rukungiri district, and Orikiriza Joshua, a 14-year-old herdsboy from Kibobo cell, Mashongora parish, Nyakagyeme sub-county, Rukungiri district.
Allegedly, on the mentioned date and time, while the three herdboys were grazing cattle at Rwenkuba Hill in Kagashe cell, Bugangari parish/sub-county, Amon and Derrick engaged in a kickboxing game. During this, Amon kicked Derrick, causing him pain. In response, Derrick struck Amon in the chest with a stone, resulting in internal injuries. Subsequently, Amon sought assistance from Orikiriza Joshua, who was standing nearby holding a long stick, known locally as orubango. Orikiriza Joshua allegedly disarmed Amon and struck Derrick on the head with the stick, causing him to collapse.
After the incident, both Amon and Orikiriza Joshua left Derrick injured and bleeding profusely from the head and returned to their respective homes. Rukundo Amston, who was working nearby, witnessed the event and promptly informed the GISO Bugangari Mini Onzo, who then alerted the Bugangari police.
