Two women are feared dead following a tragic canoe accident on Lake Bunyonyi in Musingwe village, Kitumba subcounty, Kabale District.

The incident occurred on April 15, 2025, at around 5:00 PM, when five people traveling in a canoe were caught in heavy rain. Due to the strong waves, the canoe capsized, plunging all five occupants into the water. While three managed to swim to safety, two women—Nyabukyerera Jennipher, 70, a resident of Rubanda District, and Medius Ngyenda—are still missing.

The matter was reported the following day, April 16, 2025, at the Marine Police Detachment Lake Bunyonyi by Afrika Elly, 44, a resident of Muhinga village, Kitumba subcounty.

Marine officers, led by the officer in charge of the detachment, visited the scene and launched a search for the missing victims but have so far been unsuccessful. Statements have been recorded from witnesses as investigations continue.

The Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Maate Elly, confirmed the incident and urged the public to prioritize safety by using life jackets or alternative flotation aids like empty jerrycans when traveling on water.

Authorities continue the search for the missing victims as inquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
