The Rukungiri District Education and Sports Department on Wednesday successfully organized the Primary Schools Athletics Competitions at the Rukungiri Main Stadium, attracting enthusiastic participation from learners under the age of 12 and 14.
The vibrant co-curricular event featured a variety of athletic disciplines, including long jump, high jump, 60-meter sprints, relays, and discus for both boys and girls. The event aimed at nurturing young talent and promoting physical education in line with the Ministry of Education’s policy on co-curricular activities.
Edson Mugisha, the chairperson of sports for primary schools in Rukungiri District, applauded all the schools that actively participated and extended appreciation to the district education and sports department for their dedicated organization.
Solomon, the district inspector of primary schools in charge of games and sports, expressed concern over some private schools and headteachers who continually abstain from such crucial activities. He emphasized the need for joint policy formulation by both private and government institutions to ensure full participation in future competitions.
Speaking to the learners, Jackson Tudyahumura, the District Education Officer, congratulated all zones that took part and commended the headteachers for identifying and nurturing learners’ talents. He assured that the department is committed to supporting pupils who will represent the district at the regional level in Kabale. He also encouraged continued training of the qualifying learners.
The Guest of Honour, Musiimenta Caledonia Bakironda, Rukungiri District’s Minister of Education, Commercial and Tourism, commended the organizing committee for a job well done from the zonal level to the district competitions. She emphasized the importance of co-curricular involvement and cautioned private schools that continue to avoid such events, warning that legal penalties may be enforced to ensure full compliance.
Winners from the various disciplines were rewarded with basins and Picfare sets, while the top two performers in both boys’ and girls’ categories received silver medals. A total of 24 outstanding athletes were selected to represent Rukungiri at the regional competitions in Kabale.
Buhunga Sub-county emerged as the overall winner, claiming the district trophy, with Buyanja Sub-county taking second place.
The event marked a significant step in promoting talent development and healthy competition among young learners in the district.
