Police in Rukungiri District are investigating a tragic double death that occurred on Saturday evening in Kicwamba Cell, Ibanda Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county.
The incident happened at around 5:00 PM on July 19, 2025, and left two residents dead in what authorities described as a shocking act of violence.
The deceased have been identified as Kenema Dinavence, a 43-year-old female, and Byamugisha John, aged 41, both residents of Kicwamba Cell.
According to police reports, Dinavence had just returned home from a burial in Nyarushanje and was resting in her compound when her neighbor, Byamugisha, allegedly crossed the road armed with a panga and attacked her. She sustained deep cuts to the head, neck, and shoulder and died instantly at the scene.
After the attack, Byamugisha returned to his home. When approached by the area chairperson, he reportedly admitted to the killing. However, as the chairperson attempted to recover the weapon and escort him to police, angry residents descended on the suspect and killed him on the spot.
Police from Rubabo responded quickly and informed Rukungiri Central Police Station (CPS). Key witness statements have since been recorded, and postmortems were conducted at the scene. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families for burial.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack.
