MUGABE R

Former Rujumbura County Member of Parliament aspirant and NRM flag bearer contestant Frank Arinaitwe Rukanirwa has officially announced his decision to contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming general elections.

The decision follows a disputed loss in the NRM party primaries held on 17th July 2025, where Hon. Minister Jim Muhwezi was declared the winner with 21,613 votes (54.2%) against Rukanirwa’s 17,083 votes (42.9%).

Rukanurwa and his supporters have contested the outcome, citing alleged electoral malpractices, including bribery, voter intimidation, disregard for electoral laws, and tampering with both the voters’ register and the results.

The decision to run as an independent candidate was reached during a strategy and evaluation meeting held at his home in Bwambara Trading Centre, Bwambara Sub-County, Rukungiri District. The meeting was attended by his campaign coordinators and key supporters, who unanimously backed his return to the race.

Frank Rukanirwa emphasized his commitment to serving the people of Rujumbura and stated that his candidacy is a reflection of the people’s will. He also underscored the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring fair representation, dedicating his struggle to the “people’s court” rather than relying solely on legal or electoral tribunals.

Support for his independent bid has grown steadily, with notable endorsements including that of his wife, Nalongo Dinah Tweheyo, who called on national leaders to recognize the need for justice and healing in the region. She also appealed for a presidential visit to Rujumbura to restore hope among the electorate.

Andrewson Charles Katebire, former Rukungiri District Chairman, also voiced his support, affirming that Rukanirwa represents the caliber of leadership Rujumbura needs and deserves.

The announcement was met with excitement and strong support from the gathered audience, who unanimously moved a motion backing his return to the race as an independent candidate—an offer Rukanirwa humbly accepted.
