In the early hours of Tuesday morning, tragedy struck the village of Rwamacumu in Kamuganguzi sub-county, Kabale District, when a landslide claimed the lives of two young men.

The victims, identified as Tayebwa Charles, 18, a local casual worker, and Bosco, estimated to be 17, a shamba boy of Rwandan nationality, were found dead after a mass of land and rocks slid into the home of Agrey Rukundo, where they were sleeping.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. on October 29, 2024, with the force of the landslide destroying Rukundo’s home and trapping the two young men under debris.

Area Chairperson Abraham Nuwagaba immediately notified the local Officer in Charge (OC) in Kamuganguzi, who in turn alerted the District Police Commander (DPC) and the District Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer. A police team promptly responded to the scene, where they worked to recover the bodies of the deceased from the rubble.

After the scene was thoroughly documented and processed, the bodies were successfully extracted and handed over to relatives following post-mortem examinations. Arrangements are now underway for their burial.

Speaking on behalf of the Kigezi region police, ASP Elly Maate extended condolences to the bereaved families and reminded residents to stay vigilant in landslide-prone areas, especially as the rainy season intensifies.
