The territorial police in Kabale have arrested two suspects in connection with the brutal mob killing of a 36-year-old man, Niwamanya Bedarn, a resident of Murambo 1 Cell, Kitojo Ward, Bubare Town Council in Rubanda District.

The suspects have been identified as Mutahunga Sophan, alias Muta, and Byamugisha Lauben.

According to police reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 8, 2025, at around 6:00 a.m. in Kigongi A Cell, Central Division, Kabale Municipality. It is alleged that the deceased, who was selling black tea and miraa (locally known as mairungi) opposite Manhattan Hotel in Kigongi, was accused by Muta and a private security guard of theft.

They reportedly arrested him and, with the help of unidentified accomplices, dragged him to an area opposite TikTok Bar in Kigongi, where he was beaten to death.

Authorities further allege that the suspects transported the body in a white Toyota Harrier, registration number UBC 505D, belonging to Muta, and later dumped it in Makanga Cell.

Both scenes of crime were visited, documented, and a comprehensive investigation is underway. The vehicle allegedly used in the incident has been recovered and impounded as part of the ongoing inquiries.

The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the arrests and emphasized that investigations are still ongoing to apprehend other suspects involved in the heinous act.
