Thousands have gathered at Omukagashe Playground in Rukungiri Municipality to welcome H.E. Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), along with other party leaders, during a mobilization rally aimed at opposing the NRM government led by H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.
In his address to the Rukungiri district, H.E. Kyagulanyi called for unity in the fight against dictatorship in the country. He highlighted that Rukungiri is renowned as a stronghold of opposition and the home district of Dr. Kiiza Besigye, an esteemed leader who has made significant efforts to liberate Uganda from dictatorship.
Kyagulanyi dispelled the notion held by many Ugandans that the Western region is privileged because President Museveni hails from there. He emphasized that service delivery in the West is also lacking and urged the people of Rukungiri, especially the youth, to join the struggle for a better Uganda.
Accompanying Kyagulanyi was Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and NUP Spokesperson. Ssenyonyi criticized Gen. Jim Muhwezi, the Minister of Security and Rujumbura Constituency Legislator, along with other long-serving NRM leaders in Rukungiri, for failing to provide adequate services to their constituents.
He argued that holding ministerial positions does not equate to improved public services. Instead, it often leads to increased salaries for officials and corruption, while ordinary Ugandans continue to suffer from poor service delivery. Ssenyonyi stressed that people need access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and social amenities, rather than merely having ministers from their area.
Kyagulanyi and Ssenyonyi appealed to the people of Rukungiri to support their cause in removing dictatorial leadership and establishing a democratic government.
