Residents and local leaders in Nyakabungo Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, and Nyakagyeme Sub-county are expressing concern over the theft of lightning conductors and other school equipment from schools in their area.
The affected schools include Karunoni Community Primary School and Katungu Primary School, both in Nyakabungo Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, as well as Nyakinengo Primary School in Nyakagyeme Sub-county.
Residents explain that lightning conductors are essential devices installed on buildings to protect them from lightning strikes, preventing damage by directing electrical surges safely into the ground.
Niwamanya Brian, the headteacher of Karunoni Community Primary School in Nyakabungo Parish, says they were shocked to discover that the lightning arrester installed on the building housing the primary section had been stolen. He also noted that the school bell was taken by unknown thieves. He revealed that three lightning arresters have been stolen from two schools in the area.
He is now urging the district authorities and police to expedite investigations and apprehend those responsible for the thefts.
Auther Turyarugayo Naabe, the headteacher of Nyakinengo Primary School, says the increasing cases of theft have caused fear among parents, teachers, and pupils. He expressed concerns that the criminals might also pose a threat to the lives of schoolchildren. He emphasized that the theft of lightning arresters has heightened fears about the safety of pupils.
Sylivia Turinawe, the area councilor for Nyakabungo and Kasheeshe Parishes in Buyanja Sub-county, told our reporter that it is unfortunate that criminals are endangering the lives of learners. She urged community members to be more vigilant in ensuring the security of school property.
Turinawe also called upon security teams to intensify patrols in the area, warning that what begins as petty crime could escalate into more serious offenses, including violent crimes against innocent Ugandans.
Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the LCIII chairperson of Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District, acknowledged the growing challenge of theft in the area. He stated that the situation is raising alarm among leaders and residents. Rubondo urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to authorities.
