Mr. Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the Chairperson LC3 of Buyanja Sub County, has urged farmers to comply with wetland preservation measures to restore water sources.
Speaking to residents of Rwenshekye, Kabagahe, and Kamishayo cells in Rubanga Parish during a communal effort to renovate Rwenshekye water spring, Rubondo expressed concern over the declining water flow. He attributed the issue to human activities such as farming, movement, and improper waste disposal, despite government efforts to restore natural resources. He called for a shift in mindset towards environmental conservation.
Isaac Bitwiire, the Buyanja Sub County Gomborora Internal Security Officer (GISO), commended residents for their voluntary work and emphasized the need for sustainability to prevent future destruction.
Lilian Tushemerirwe Bigombe, the LC1 Chairperson of Rwenshekye Cell, lamented the scarcity of water sources in the area, noting that residents rely on only two water springs and a dysfunctional borehole. She appealed for the borehole’s renovation to improve water supply for the neighborhood.
Joram Kwikiriza, the LC1 Chairperson of Kabagahe Cell, highlighted the community’s enthusiasm for restoring their sole water source to prevent the consumption of contaminated water. He praised well-wishers, including Hon. Naboth Namanya, the Area Member of Parliament, who contributed construction materials and UGX 400,000 for technical labor. He noted that the total cost of the project was UGX 1.6 million, which was fully covered by well-wishers. Kwikiriza also revealed plans to form an oversight committee to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.
Women in the community expressed relief, saying that the project would save them from fetching contaminated water from swamps, which previously led to waterborne diseases and delayed children at water sources late into the evening.
