Students have been encouraged to actively participate in games and sports for both health benefits and opportunities that enhance quality education.

This message was delivered today, Friday, 6th June 2025, by Sabiiti Erick, the head teacher of Rwabukoba Secondary School in Ruhinda Sub County, Rukungiri District, while addressing students during the school’s Sports Day celebrations.

Rwabukoba Secondary School organized inter-house games and sports competitions in preparation for the District Ball 2 Championship scheduled to begin on the 11th of this month.

Students took part in athletics, javelin, shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, and triple jump. In the competitions, Kenyatta House emerged top among girls with 183 points, while Nyerere House led among boys with 191 points. Overall, Nyerere House was declared the champion.

Mr. Sabiiti emphasized the importance of prioritizing games and sports as a critical part of holistic education. He noted that sports contribute to students’ mental strength and talent development, and encouraged learners to take advantage of sports for capacity building.

Tumukunde Peter Kabahango, the school’s games teacher, expressed confidence in the school’s readiness to perform well in the upcoming district competitions. However, he raised concern about the poor condition of playgrounds, which he said hampers student performance.

Atumanya Audrey, the games prefect, expressed her strong passion for sports and praised the spirit of voluntary participation among students. She highlighted how sports nurture talent and bring pride to the school.

Allan Muhereza emphasized the importance of traditional sports and revealed that some students are preparing for recruitment into the armed forces. He expressed optimism that Rwabukoba Secondary School will win the district competitions.

Nuwamanya Richard, an athlete and footballer, spoke about the excitement surrounding sports. He highlighted the role of sports in earning scholarships and called on fellow students to prioritize sports alongside academic pursuits.
