Uganda will celebrate National Heroes Day on Monday, June 9th, 2025, at Lyantonde Technical Institute Grounds in Kaliro Town Council, Lyantonde District.
Heroes Day is a national public holiday observed annually to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to Uganda’s liberation struggle and national development. The day was first commemorated on June 9, 1989, marking the 1981 incident where a group of National Resistance Army (NRA) fighters led by Edidian Mukiibi Luttamaguzi were killed by the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) for aiding the resistance.
The sacrifice of Luttamaguzi and his colleagues laid the foundation for the tradition of recognising Uganda’s heroes.
According to Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the LCIII Chairperson of Buyanja Sub-county, every Ugandan is a hero. He also recognized the Uganda Martyrs, celebrated on June 3rd, as heroes. Rubondo dismissed the trending rumours on social media suggesting that Dr. Col. Kizza Besigye could be hanged on Heroes Day, stating that such an act would not solve Uganda’s problems since Besigye is also a hero and a freedom fighter.
Speaking to Boona FM, Wednesday Twinomujuni, the LCIII Chairperson of Nyakishenyi Sub-county, said Heroes Day should be celebrated by all Ugandans because every person plays a heroic role in their family, village, and nation.
He further condemned the social media rumours about hanging Dr. Besigye, saying that such an act would undermine the peace that the ruling government, NRM, brought. He emphasized that Besigye is a hero and deserves respect.
This year’s celebration will be held under the theme:
“The Legacy of Our Heroes is the Memory of a Great Name and the Ideals They Stood For”,
which highlights the importance of preserving the values and sacrifices made by those who fought for Uganda’s freedom and progress.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to officiate as Guest of Honour, alongside other dignitaries whose names will be confirmed by the organising committee.
During the event, the government will bestow medals and national honours on distinguished individuals, both living and deceased, in recognition of their outstanding service in sectors such as security, public service, and community leadership.
