Parents, teachers, and pupils at Kamunyiga Primary School in Kajara County have been left stranded after strong winds accompanied by heavy rain demolished a four-classroom block on Sunday evening.

The affected block, which housed Primary One to Primary Four, was completely brought down, forcing pupils to take lessons under trees while others are squeezed into the remaining classrooms.

Headteacher Geoffrey Mugume described the situation as desperate, noting that the pupils’ learning environment has been severely disrupted. He appealed to government authorities and well-wishers to make a swift intervention and help rebuild the classrooms since the structure was “totally demolished.”

Residents living near the school also suffered the wrath of the storm. Benadet Bariwahenki, a neighbor and eyewitness, said the winds “tossed everything around,” breaking crops and carrying the classroom roof into a nearby compound.

Another resident, Scovia Aniembabazi, revealed that her house developed cracks as a result of the storm. She described how her family narrowly escaped tragedy when the strong winds hit the village.

Ntungamo District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Kiza Fedelis, confirmed that the district has already dispatched the engineer and technical team to the site to assess the extent of the damage. He noted that authorities will decide whether to renovate the collapsed structure or build a new one altogether.

Fedelis further encouraged residents to plant trees around their homes and farms as a natural barrier against destructive winds.
