Several families in Nyamigenda Village, Chanika Town Council, Kisoro District, are homeless after a devastating storm swept through the area on Sunday evening. The heavy downpour, which lasted for an hour, destroyed four homes, a school, and extensive crop fields, including beans, maize, onions, and Irish potatoes.
The local LC1 Chairperson, Joseph Karasira, described the event as part of a troubling pattern of heavy rains accompanied by strong winds that frequently affect the community. “These storms often cause severe damage to gardens, leading to recurring food shortages,” Karasira noted.
Erasmus Sanyu, the Mayor of Chanika Town Council, reported widespread destruction but confirmed that no lives were lost. He assured residents that the council would document the extent of the damage and relay the findings to the Kisoro Resident District Commissioner and the Disaster Preparedness Office for potential assistance.
Meanwhile, Hon. Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament-elect, has urged local leaders to provide immediate aid to affected families. She pledged her commitment to collaborate with district authorities to support the impacted schools and families, emphasizing the critical need to prioritize education for the community’s children.
