Residents of Nyombe Parish in Kahungye Sub County, Kabale District, are grappling with the aftermath of a devastating storm that struck yesterday, causing widespread destruction.
The heavy downpour, which lasted about an hour and began around 4:10 PM, was accompanied by strong winds that ripped off the roof of Nyombe Church of Uganda.
Dickson Kamuhanda, a local resident, reported that the storm not only damaged the church but also destroyed several gardens, with banana plantations suffering the most severe impact. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed as affected families cope with their losses.
Obed Baguma, the Lay Leader of Nyombe Church of Uganda, has appealed to well-wishers, politicians, and the government to assist in rebuilding the church. He emphasized that the church is a vital pillar for the community’s spiritual and social well-being, and its destruction has created a significant void.
“As a community, we are doing what we can, but we urgently need help to re-roof the church. We appeal to everyone who can support us in restoring this place of worship,” Baguma stated.
Efforts are now underway to mobilize resources for reconstruction, with local leaders and community members collaborating to restore normalcy.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events and highlights the need for improved disaster preparedness measures. Authorities are expected to assess the storm’s full impact in the coming days as residents work to recover from the devastation.
