St. Mary’s College Rushoroza emerged as the 2025 USSSA Kigezi Region football champions after a thrilling final match held on Sunday at Mutolere SS playground in Kisoro District.

The team secured a 2-0 victory against St. Gerald’s Secondary School Nyakibale, with both goals netted by star striker Okupiirani Juvenile. The win not only earned Rushoroza regional glory but also a spot in the national USSSA games.

Joining St. Mary’s College Rushoroza at the nationals will be St. Gerald’s SS Nyakibale from Rukungiri District and Bishop Comboni College Kambuga from Kanungu District. The trio will represent the Kigezi Region at the national championships scheduled to take place from July 9th to 17th at St. Peter’s College in Tororo.

The journey to the finals was not without intense competition. In the semifinals, St. Mary’s College Rushoroza drew 1-1 with Bishop Comboni College, while St. Gerald’s SS Nyakibale faced Kyabugashe SS in a goalless draw that was settled through a tense penalty shootout, with St. Gerald’s emerging victorious at 3-2.

St. Mary’s College was guided to victory by Coach Akim, the former head coach of St. Gerald’s SS, which won the 2023 USSSA Kigezi Region championship.

However, the final was followed by a brief controversy when Bishop Comboni College Kambuga filed a petition accusing St. Mary’s of fielding overage players. The petition was later dismissed by sports authorities due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

With the regional championship secured, all eyes are now on St. Mary’s College Rushoroza and the other Kigezi representatives as they prepare to take on the nation’s best in Tororo this July.
