Over 250 students have successfully completed a week-long patriotism training camp at St. Gerald’s Secondary School Nyakyibale in Rukungiri District, aimed at instilling discipline, hard work, and national pride among the youth.

The Resident District Commissioner of Rukungiri, Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, who officiated at the passing-out ceremony as the chief guest, urged the students to remain disciplined, manage their time effectively, and value their health. He emphasized that poverty is often a result of mindset and lack of effort, encouraging the newly passed-out patriots to work hard, believe in themselves, and use their hands to survive.

Throughout the week, the students were engaged in a range of transformative activities including sanitation exercises, financial literacy sessions on saving and investing, and physical training. These were all geared towards building a sense of responsibility and love for the nation.

Vital Bashasha, the Rukungiri District Patriotism Coordinator, explained that the Patriotism Program, initiated under the State House in 2019, targets young people—especially secondary school students—to foster self-love, discipline, and a proactive attitude towards national development. He stressed the importance of instilling financial discipline and good health practices at a young age.

The Head Teacher, Cleophas Agaba, lauded the initiative for its positive impact on students’ behavior and attitudes towards school and national responsibility. He noted that the annual camp, targeting Senior One and Senior Five students, has helped in shaping learners who take pride in maintaining school property and demonstrating self-respect and patriotism.

Student beneficiaries, including Nahurira Mackline (S.5) and Asaph Niwabine (S.2), praised the program for helping them build character, appreciate leadership, and prepare for a successful future through early investments and physical wellness.

The Patriotism Camp continues to be a cornerstone in grooming responsible, resilient, and patriotic citizens ready to contribute positively to Uganda’s future.
