The priest of Kagati Church of Uganda Parish in North Kigezi Diocese, Rev. Isaac Muriisa, has called on Ugandans to elect members of parliament who uphold the dignity of civilians and prioritize people-centered legislation.

Rev. Muriisa made the appeal during a baptism, prayer service, and fundraiser event for the welfare of detained opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye. The event, held in Kitanda Cell, Nyakaina Parish, Buyanja Sub County, was organized by the extended family of the late Yafesi Murera and also featured the planting of a memorial tree in Murera’s honor.

In his sermon, Rev. Muriisa criticized what he termed the abuse of democracy and the erosion of independence in the hands of government. He cited the recently passed Court Martial Bill as an example of laws that, according to him, humiliate civilians and reflect a dark history of oppressive leadership.

The event drew various family members and local leaders who echoed similar concerns over the current state of governance in Uganda. Dr. Olive Kobusingye, a cousin of Dr. Besigye, expressed gratitude for the public support and prayers, describing her cousin’s imprisonment as unjust but rooted in his fight for truth and civilian rights.

Richard Biryomumaisho Karani, Councilor for Northern Ward in Kebisoni Town Council, expressed hope that prayers would lead to Besigye’s release, while also condemning the violence and abuse of youth during the recently held NRM primaries.

Besigye’s grandmother, Norah Bangumwaho, described Uganda as a “captive country” and appealed for the immediate release of her grandson to heal what she called “broken hearts.” Another relative, Musinguzi Bernard, welcomed the spiritual support from the community, expressing confidence that God’s intervention would ensure Besigye’s freedom.

The event concluded with a collective prayer for peace, justice, and democratic renewal in Uganda.
