Despite facing allegations of corruption and abuse of office during her tenure, Speaker Anita Among has announced that she has only one term left before stepping down and passing the role to her Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa. She emphasized that there is no reason for her to cling to power.
Among made this announcement during the opening ceremony of St. Charles Lwanga Kigarama Church, which was funded with Shs2.7 billion raised by Tayebwa and his associates from the business community. The event also served as a Thanksgiving celebration for Daudi Bangirana, Tayebwa’s father, who turned 80 and took place in Mitooma district.
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa addressed public criticism regarding the church’s construction and the sources of its funding. He clarified that a significant portion of the funds—Shs1.7 billion—was collected from his business friends in a single 30-minute meeting.
Archbishop Lambert Bainomugisha of Mbarara Archdiocese urged Ugandans to follow Tayebwa’s example of responsible resource management for the betterment of their communities. He made these remarks during the Thanksgiving ceremony, which coincided with the official opening of St. Charles Lwanga Kigarama Church, constructed with Shs1.2 billion of the raised funds.
Tayebwa explained that the church was built in honor of his late grandmother, Jurita, who played a crucial role in his upbringing and instilled in him the religious values that have contributed to his success. His grandmother, Katima Tiruhongyerwa Omurara Muntu wa Kagunga, passed away at the age of 99 on March 27, 2022.
