In Kisoro District, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has officially nominated six candidates for the upcoming by-election for the Woman Member of Parliament seat, left vacant by the recent passing of Sarah Mateke.
Mateke, who previously held the position, succumbed to heart complications in early September, prompting the IEC to declare the position open and invite interested candidates to contest.
The nomination process, held at the Kisoro District Headquarters, was overseen by District Returning Officer Dan Nayebare. Beginning yesterday, the exercise concluded today with six candidates confirmed for the race.
The candidates include Rose Kabagyeni, representing the National Resistance Movement (NRM); Juliet Musanase from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC); Cyimpaye Aisha under the People’s Progressive Party (PPP); and Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, running as an Independent. Also competing are Zubedi Sultana Salim on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, and Ingabire Mable from the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).
Additionally, nine candidates have been nominated for various local government council positions in the district.
The campaign period will officially begin on November 1, extending until November 12, 2024, as the candidates prepare to rally support in hopes of representing Kisoro District in Parliament.
