Locals from Ruyonza Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-County, Rukungiri District, have voiced their concerns about rising theft in the area, which they believe is exacerbated by the police allegedly releasing suspects before they even reach their homes.
In an interview with Boona FM, Pauson Bibyomumisho Kajere, the former councilor of Ruyonza Parish, highlighted that the increasing criminality, particularly the theft of pigs and goats, is undermining community development projects. He pointed out that local farmers are now living in fear as their crops and animals become frequent targets for theft.
Pauson reported that in the past month, over 20 goats and 10 pigs have been stolen, with the rate of theft escalating to 3-5 goats and pigs disappearing each day. He attributes this rise in crime to unemployed youth who choose criminal activities over honest work.
He also mentioned that suspects arrested for theft are often brought to the police but are released even before spending a full day in custody. This situation forces residents to sleep with their animals in their homes, posing a significant threat to their safety.
Despite holding several village meetings to address the issue, Pauson noted that these efforts have been in vain.
Moses Byakatonda, another resident, expressed that the community can no longer sleep peacefully due to fear of theft. He added that despite mobilizing people to be vigilant, their efforts have been ineffective, leading them to suspect that some of those they are mobilizing might be involved in the thefts.
Moses urged local leaders to work closely with the police to address the situation, as the rising theft is likely to lead to increased poverty in the area.
