Residents of Nyakinengo Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri District, are increasingly concerned about consuming contaminated water. They have reported that there is no safe water source in the area, and they rely on river streams and wells shared with livestock, which are often contaminated by human waste.
Odira Kemigisha, the Chairperson of traders at Kirehe Trading Center and Church, expressed deep concern over the situation. She highlighted that residents are forced to fetch stagnant water after livestock have used it and face severe water shortages during the dry season when wells dry up.
George Musinguzi, an elderly resident of Kirehe Cell, attributed the frequent typhoid outbreaks in the area to the shared water sources with livestock. He has called on leaders and well-wishers to come to their aid.
Lawrence Byaruhanga, the Sub County Councilor representing Nyakinengo Parish, stated that installing springs and boreholes in the area exceeds the Sub County’s budget. He has appealed to the Area Members of Parliament to fulfill their campaign promises and assist with this urgent need.
