Christians in Rukungiri have been urged to call on God for justice for Dr. Kizza Besigye, who remains in prison due to what was described as political injustices. The call was made during a Sunday service and Mary’s Day celebration at All Saints Church, Rujumbura, North Kigezi Diocese.
While delivering the sermon, Rev. Julius Kobweme from St. Paul Bumbeire Church, Bweranyangi Deanery, West Ankole Diocese, emphasized the importance of discipline among women, urging them to obey God and their husbands while embracing faith to overcome life’s challenges.
He further encouraged respect, trustworthiness, and cooperation in marriages, highlighting that family progress depends on these values. Additionally, he urged unmarried young women to protect their dignity, citing Mother Mary as an example of purity and respectability.
Rev. Julius also called upon Christians to pray fervently, especially during this Lent period, for the release of Rukungiri-born political figure Dr. Kizza Besigye. He likened Besigye’s situation to that of Peter in the Bible, whose prison chains were broken through the faith and prayers of believers.
Catherine Arineitwe, the All Saints Mother’s Union Chairperson, appreciated fellow women and Christians for their presence at the celebration. She urged mothers to emulate the character of Mother Mary in order to overcome family challenges. She also encouraged young women to uphold moral values, emphasizing that Mary was respected for her virtuous behavior and purity.
Meanwhile, Rukungiri Municipality MP, Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, while addressing the congregation, criticized the media for allegedly publishing false statements about his remarks on Dr. Besigye during a burial ceremony in Kagyera Cell, Northern Ward, Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality. He noted that the misrepresentation of his speech had created controversy across the country.
Hon. Rutahigwa reaffirmed that he holds no political grudges against Dr. Besigye, stating that he has always loved and cared for everyone regardless of political differences. He accused some media practitioners of attempting to tarnish his name by reporting misleading statements, further noting that some journalists claim he has done nothing in Parliament.
In response, Rutahigwa defended his record, arguing that he has done more for his people than many other leaders.
