The Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, His Grace Lambert Bainomugisha, has urged Christians to embrace unity in Christ rather than fostering hatred and sectarianism among themselves.
Archbishop Bainomugisha made the appeal during a Holy Mass at St. Joseph’s Rubindi Catholic Parish in Mbarara District.
The Archbishop emphasized the importance of communal harmony, drawing parallels between how Christians gather before God and how they should live together in their daily lives.
The Mass was part of a fundraising drive organized by the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Foundation (AMDF) to support the construction of a mega arcade at the Mbarara Catholic Social Centre in Mbarara City, an initiative aimed at generating revenue for the Archdiocese.
The ceremony was presided over by the Commissioner for Urban Water and Sewerage Services in the Ministry of Water and Environment, Eng. John Twinomujuni, who represented the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa.
Commending the Archdiocese’s efforts in fostering development, Twinomujuni contributed UGX 10 million towards the project, a sum that was also matched by the Deputy Speaker.
Former Mbarara District Chairperson, Capt. JB Tumusiime Bamuturaki, appealed to Christians to work hard to improve their income-generating activities to fight poverty and boost household economic stability. He also advised them to avoid sectarianism and tribalism, in line with President Museveni’s message on national development.
The Member of Parliament for Kashari North, Mbarara District, Bazil Bataringaya Rwankwene Omwonyo, appreciated the Christians for their contributions towards the church project, noting that donations from Rome are no longer as abundant as they used to be.
Additionally, Mbarara District Woman MP, Margaret Ayebare Rwebyabu, called upon Christians to promote unity and shun divisionism, which hinders social and economic development.
The event raised over UGX 200 million towards the construction of the Mbarara Archdiocese arcade, a project estimated to cost over UGX 8.53 billion.
