Youth entrepreneurs in Rukungiri District have been encouraged to embrace innovation, creativity, and self-employment as they prepare to participate in the upcoming 25th East African Community (EAC) Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Trade Exhibition, also known as the Jua Kali/Nguvu Kazi Exhibition, scheduled to take place in Kenya from December 7–18, 2025.

This call was made during a youth entrepreneurship workshop held on Tuesday afternoon at the Rukungiri Municipal offices, spearheaded by Mr. Godfrey Tukamubona, the East African Community Marketing Manager. The workshop specifically targeted self-employed youth, aiming to prepare and inspire them to engage in regional markets through the promotion of their locally-made products.

While addressing participants, Mr. Tukamubona urged young entrepreneurs to prioritize innovation and creativity to boost the growth of their enterprises and prepare them for international exposure. He also encouraged them to take advantage of government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and youth funds to access financial support.

“Young people should rely on creativity and innovation to scale up their enterprises and penetrate international markets. Government programs exist to support you—make use of them,” Tukamubona emphasized.

Speaking at the same event, Ms. Tweyambe Grace, the Principal Commercial Officer for Rukungiri Municipality, encouraged youth engaged in hands-on businesses to maintain high standards of product quality and branding to appeal to international consumers. She also stressed the importance of organization, cooperation, and joining government youth programs to access clean capital for business development.

“Excellent quality and branding are your ticket to the international market. Be organized and cooperative to tap into broader opportunities,” said Grace.

Mr. Niwagaba Robert Kanchanchari, leader of the Rukungiri Municipality Youth Enyoga SACCO, called on young business owners to seize the opportunity to showcase their products at the Kenyan exhibition. He emphasized the need for quality, quantity, and appealing branding, while urging youth to join SACCOs for better access to investment capital.

Mr. Abaho Rodgers, Director of AR Initiatives and mobilizer of youth with small enterprises in Rukungiri, applauded the workshop organizers for their impactful sessions. He pledged to participate in the Kenyan trade show and encouraged unemployed youth to create self-employment opportunities to improve their incomes and tap into international markets.

Meanwhile, Mr. Owoyesigire Perry, a Municipal Officer with Rukungiri Council, urged self-employed youth to participate in the upcoming East African trade show and enroll in the Presidential Skilling Hub in Kabale District to enhance their practical skills.

He also cautioned the youth against being manipulated by politicians during this political season, warning that many are only interested in winning votes.

“Avoid being used by politicians who have no long-term plans for you. Instead, join youth cooperatives and associations that can support your businesses with capital,” Perry advised.

The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment among participants to grow their enterprises, seek broader markets, and actively prepare for the 25th EAC MSMEs Trade Exhibition in Kenya.
