The Kanungu District Ebola Task Force has closed the Ishasha and Kyeshero border posts following an outbreak of the Bundibugyo Ebola strain in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The move follows confirmation of two imported Ebola cases in Kampala on May 15 and 16, linked to the outbreak first detected in the DRC in late April this year.
Kanungu District Task Force Chairperson, Ambrose Amanyire Mwesigye, says no Ebola cases have been reported along the border, but cross-border movement through the affected entry points has been suspended as a precaution.
District authorities have intensified public awareness campaigns and tightened surveillance at border points to prevent possible transmission. Emergency response plans have also been activated with support from health partners and local leaders.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Kisoro District, Resident District Commissioner Hajji Badru Sebyala says the district Ebola task force will meet this week to assess the situation and consider restrictions at the Busanza-Kitagoma and Bunagana border posts.
Health officials continue to urge the public to remain vigilant, observe Ebola preventive measures, and report suspected symptoms to nearby health facilities immediately.
