Rukungiri District Commercial Officer, Ms. Calorine Atuhaire, has urged members of savings and credit cooperative organizations (SACCOs) to stay focused on development and avoid divisions that could be fueled by politics. Speaking today at the second annual general meeting of the Nyarushanje NRM Fraternity SACCO, held at the Nyarushanje Sub-County headquarters, Calorine emphasized that political differences often cause tension among members and leaders of certain SACCOs, hindering their progress.
She highlighted the importance of unity in promoting development, noting that the government supports groups that work together to combat poverty.
Jolly Mashaija, the Rukungiri District Chairperson for Women and a member of this SACCO, praised the NRM members in Nyarushanje Sub-County for their hard work in establishing the SACCO and for their commitment to the NRM party. She encouraged members to use the SACCO to save money, secure loans to improve their homes, and ensure their children’s education.
Mashaija also mentioned that the SACCO should serve as a stronghold for the NRM party, particularly in preparing for elections by playing a role in selecting party flag bearers.
Kamugisha Benard Mate, the SACCO Board Chairperson, stated that their two-year-old SACCO aims to bring together NRM party members and help them benefit from the SACCO for development. He mentioned that they are working towards acquiring their own offices, hiring employees, and developing essential policies such as governance and human resource policies.
However, Kamugisha also pointed out some challenges hindering their SACCO’s growth, including loan defaulters and the lack of proper office space.
