Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner, Steven Nsubunga Bewayo, has issued a stern warning to schools against commencing classes before the official opening day for the first term.

During an exclusive interview with our reporter on Tuesday, he disclosed that some parents are violating the Ministry of Education and Sports regulations by sending their children to school for lessons during the holiday period.

Bewayo emphasized that all school headteachers must be aware that the Ministry of Education’s designated reopening date is February 5, 2024. Any school found operating before this date will be subject to legal consequences. He pointed out that such actions go against the Ministry’s policy and academic calendar, denying students the opportunity to rest and adequately prepare for the upcoming academic year.

To enforce this directive, RDC Bewayo has instructed the District Education Officer’s office to deploy school inspectors and ensure strict compliance with the official opening day. A recent survey indicates that a majority of both government-aided and private schools are currently conducting holiday classes in violation of the set regulations.
