Residents of Katuna Town Council in Kabale District are urging the installation of street lights along the Katuna border to counter the increasing crime in the region.

According to the residents, a significant portion of the town council remains in darkness, with only Katuna One Stop Border Point benefiting from government-installed solar street lights aimed at facilitating movement at the Uganda-Rwanda border.

Geoffrey Atwiine, a motorcyclist, along with traders Kellen Mangoye and Bernard Kyomuhendo, have voiced concerns over criminals exploiting poorly lit areas to ambush and rob them. They highlight that the absence of street lights compels them to close their shops early due to the fear of potential attacks.

Katuna Town Council’s Town Clerk, Christmas Byarugaba, mentioned ongoing efforts to lobby the government, working through division leadership, to secure funds for installing street lights along major roads in the area.

In a report from last December, Moses Enyemu, the Officer In-Charge of Katuna Border Police Post, revealed registering a minimum of five cases involving assault and house breakages each month.
