Tragedy struck in Kisoro District in the early hours of Sunday morning after a landslide claimed the lives of two young girls and left two elderly residents injured.

The incident occurred at around 5:00 a.m. on May 3, 2026, in Nyabiyonga Village, Kibumba Parish, Murora Sub-county, when a section of a house was buried by soil following a landslide on the hilly terrain.

The deceased have been identified as Musoni Brenda, 14, and Mujawimana Eseri, 12, both pupils and residents of Bukerahe Village in Chibumba Parish. According to reports, the two had been staying with their grandparents during the school holidays.

It is alleged that at the time of the incident, the girls were asleep in the house along with their grandparents when the landslide struck, partially burying the structure. The two minors died of suspected suffocation.

The grandparents, identified as Mulema Benon, 70, and Mbaboneye Avelina, 60, survived the ordeal with minor injuries. They were rescued by local residents and later rushed to Chahafi Health Centre for medical treatment.

Police officers visited and documented the scene, with the help of community members successfully retrieving the bodies from the debris. Postmortem examinations have since been conducted.

Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the development and urged residents in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
