Police in Kampala have arrested a bodyguard attached to Anita Among following a shooting incident involving a female motorist near the Speaker’s residence.
The suspect, identified as Corporal Humphrey Muhanguzi, is currently in custody as investigations continue into the incident that occurred along Mackinnon Road. The woman, whose identity has not yet been released, sustained injuries and is receiving medical attention.
According to Uganda Police Force spokesperson Rachael Kawala, initial details were limited, but inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Preliminary reports indicate that the motorist had been returning from prayers at All Saints Cathedral when she approached a road leading to the Speaker’s residence—an area currently under heightened security and partial construction.
Chris Obore stated that an altercation reportedly arose between the officer and the driver after she insisted on using the restricted road. During the confrontation, the officer is said to have struck the vehicle’s bonnet with his firearm, which then discharged, leading to the injury.
Officials from the Speaker’s office confirmed that Anita Among was not at her residence at the time. While returning from Bukedea District, where she had attended a family event, she was informed of the incident by police.
In a statement, Principal Press Secretary Sabiti Joseph said the Speaker was briefed upon arrival and has since reached out to the victim’s family. She expressed sympathy and pledged support for the woman’s medical treatment, while closely monitoring her recovery.
Authorities have confirmed that the officer has been handed over for further investigation, with directives issued to expedite the inquiry process.
The incident has sparked renewed attention on the conduct of armed personnel assigned to VIP protection, particularly in civilian settings where tensions can escalate quickly.
