The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Rukungiri District, Steven Nsubuga Bewaayo, has urged young people to embrace sports, emphasizing that they are not only an economic activity but also help in preventing diseases.

While presiding as the guest of honor at the Rukungiri-Kanungu Compassion-Assisted Projects Sports Day Competitions held at St. Gerald’s Playground in Nyakibale, Rukungiri District, the RDC highlighted the vital role sports play in health and well-being. He encouraged young people to embrace sports as they promote physical fitness and help prevent diseases associated with a lack of exercise.

He added that the more active people are in sports, the more they can avoid illnesses caused by inactivity. Experts state that regular physical activity helps prevent and treat noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and breast and colon cancer, making it essential for a healthy lifestyle.

The RDC further emphasized that sports can serve as an economic activity for youth by helping them develop their talents to a national and even international level, which can, in turn, reduce unemployment in Uganda.

He pointed out that sports not only promote talent but also instill discipline among young people and foster friendships that often lead to opportunities for both parties.

The RDC praised the organizers for creating such an impactful day and encouraged them to continue supporting Ugandans in accessing education and other essential services.

Solomon Arinaitwe, the Sports Officer for Rukungiri District, commended the organizers for nurturing young talent and noted that the district appreciates the work being done by Compassion in helping young people acquire education and develop their talents in sports.

He encouraged the youth to continue developing their talents when given opportunities and urged them to participate in the forthcoming National Athletics Competitions that will take place in Kabale District this year.

One of the Compassion overseers, Mr. Mashemererwa, expressed his gratitude to the participants and guests for gracing the event.

He said he is very optimistic that these young people will reach the national level if they continue training and developing their talents. He assured them of continued support to ensure that these youth achieve great success in the future,

The competitors included Ndago CDC, Kyamakanda CDC, Katagata CDC, Rukungiri CDC, and Kakinga CDC.

Ndago CDC emerged winners in both football and netball, while Katagata CDC excelled in athletics.

The winners were rewarded with goats and other prizes, including bed sheets.
