The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rukungiri, Steven Nsubunga Bewayo, has called on all schools in the district to establish patriotism clubs as a way to instill a sense of love for the country among students.
Speaking on Thursday during the passing-out ceremony for patriots at Kinyasaano Girls High School, RDC Nsubunga emphasized the importance of introducing learners to patriotism early. He noted that doing so can help students avoid engaging in wrongdoing and encourage them to fight corruption both in schools and their communities.
He commended the headteacher and the school management committees of Kinyasaano Girls High School for fostering patriotism skills among learners. He further challenged the students to demonstrate love for their country and embrace a mindset of responsibility and ownership.
“The essence of patriotism is to instill a sense of ownership and facilitate mindset change,” RDC Nsubunga remarked.
Allen Kiyasimiire, the headteacher of Kinyasaano Girls High School, highlighted the positive impact of the patriotism club in the school, noting that it has significantly enhanced discipline and curbed student misconduct.
She expressed gratitude to the RDC for supporting the initiative by officiating the passing-out ceremony and commended the district’s patriotism office for their efforts in promoting patriotism clubs in schools across Rukungiri.
“I urge our patriots to embrace the morals and values they have been taught and to apply them in their lives and communities to make a difference,” Kiyasimiire stated.
Vito Bashasha, the coordinator of patriotism activities in Rukungiri district, explained that the course aims to prepare young students to be responsible citizens and foster mindset transformation for both personal and national development.
Assistant RDC Kellen Kagisha, who oversees patriotism in the district, urged students to uphold discipline, love themselves, and cherish their country. She cautioned them against behaviors that could lead to dropping out of school, such as engaging in inappropriate relationships.
She also encouraged students to take up casual work during holidays to assist their parents, thus giving them a reason to continue supporting their education.
The patriotism initiative in Rukungiri district is seen as a vital step towards nurturing responsible and patriotic future leaders.
