The Catholic Church in Bushenyi District has launched a campaign advocating against the practice of placing wrapped flowers or wreaths on coffins during burial ceremonies.
Rev. Fr. Evalist Mutambi of St. Kagwa Parish, Bushenyi District, is urging relatives and friends to replace this tradition with laying tree seedlings on coffins. These seedlings can later be planted, providing an environmentally friendly alternative to flowers wrapped in polythene bags, contributing to environmental degradation.
Fr. Mutambi acknowledged the potential resistance from traditionalists and florists but emphasized his commitment to promoting this campaign as part of broader efforts to combat the use of kavera (polythene bags) and conserve the environment.
The campaign was launched during an environmental awareness event held at the district headquarters, followed by activities at Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality grounds, St. Kagwa Parish headquarters, Bassajjalaba Mosque, and St. Peter’s Cathedral, Bweranyangi, the headquarters of the West Ankole Diocese.
Tree seedlings were planted and distributed to leaders of various institutions, including Kabushaho Secondary School, Kabushaho Primary School, Kyabugimbi Town Council, and Rutooma Health Centre III in Kyeizoba Sub-County.
