The Rukungiri District Principal Inspector of Schools, Ms. Tushemereirwe Lydia, has urged parents whose children did not perform well in the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) and are unable to join secondary schools to consider alternative options, such as equipping them with vocational skills.

Speaking to our reporter at her office at the Rukungiri District Headquarters, Ms. Lydia revealed that 188 pupils in Rukungiri District failed the PLE and are not eligible to progress to secondary education. She encouraged parents to teach their children practical skills like motor vehicle mechanics, tailoring, carpentry and joinery, catering, and other vocational trades, emphasizing that these skills can help the youth secure livelihoods.

Ms. Lydia also advised students who performed well in the PLE not to become complacent but to remain focused and aim higher in their secondary education. She noted that many learners become overconfident after primary school and struggle at the O-Level due to laxity.

A total of 117 sitting centers in Rukungiri District had registered 6,686 candidates for the 2024 PLE. However, 78 candidates did not sit for the exams due to unknown reasons, leaving 6,608 candidates who successfully completed the examinations and received their results.

She disclosed that Rukungiri District ranked 61st in the country for the 2024 PLE results, an improvement compared to its 2023 position.

The district’s PLE performance was distributed as follows:

Division One: 713 candidates (19.7%)
Division Two: 3,690 candidates (55.2%)
Division Three: 1,622 candidates (24.3%)
Division Four: 395 candidates (5.9%)
Grade 7: 78 candidates (1.2%)
Grade U (Ungraded): 188 candidates (2.9%).
Ms. Lydia highlighted that the failure rate in 2024 was lower than in previous years, reflecting gradual progress.

Among government schools, Buhunga Primary School stood out as the best performer, with 20 candidates excelling in their results. Rubanga Parents Primary School achieved a remarkable milestone, with all 34 candidates attaining Division One grades, making it the best-performing school overall.
