The highly anticipated court case involving Rukungiri NRM Registrar, Mwongyera Wright, has been postponed to Monday, July 28, following the absence of magistrates who are reportedly on leave.
Mwongyera was allegedly arrested on Thursday and detained overnight at Rukungiri Central Police Station (CPS). He is accused of tampering with the results of the Rubabo County NRM Parliamentary flag bearer race.
According to the complainant, Bob Rugonde, the electoral process was compromised when NRM District Registrar Mr. Mugarura prematurely declared Mathias Rwabugumi the flag bearer. Rugonde claims the declaration was made while results from eight polling stations had not yet been counted, allegedly under “orders from above.”
Speaking to our reporter outside the Rukungiri Magistrate’s Court, Rugonde expressed confidence in his victory and insisted that only a recount from the omitted polling stations can restore the integrity of the process.
Dozens of Rugonde’s supporters gathered at the court premises, voicing their frustration with the NRM Electoral Commission. Many expressed their intention to abandon the party if justice is not served. They also appealed to President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM party chairman, to intervene in the matter.
The case is now set to be heard on Monday, with court expected to rule on the possibility of a vote recount in the contested polling stations.
As the political tension builds, all eyes remain on the Rukungiri Magistrate’s Court for a verdict that could impact the ruling party’s unity ahead of the 2026 general elections.
