The Finance Department of Rukungiri Municipality has raised concerns about poor hygiene at Kagogo slaughter slab, urging immediate action to prevent potential health risks.

Kagogo slaughter slab, the busiest facility for animal slaughter in the municipality, requires regular maintenance to ensure cleanliness and prevent the spread of diseases that could affect both animals and consumers.

Speaking to our reporter, Gideon Turyamubugana, the councilor for Kanyinya Ward and a member of the finance committee, expressed deep concern over the unhygienic conditions at the slaughter slab. He emphasized that the facility, which generates revenue daily, should be kept in good condition. He urged those responsible to clean up the area before an outbreak of diseases poses a serious health threat.

Fred Besigye, the Secretary of the Finance Department in Rukungiri Municipality, echoed these concerns, highlighting the deteriorating state of the facility. He noted that the fence is broken, septic tanks are full and have not been emptied, and overall sanitation is poor. He called upon Western Division authorities to take urgent action to maintain hygiene, particularly by improving trenches and drainage systems.

In response, Sylvia Twinomugisha, Chairperson of Western Division, assured the public that authorities are aware of the situation and have plans to address it soon. She stated that cleanup efforts would commence shortly, and there was no cause for alarm.

Paul Kalenzi, Senior Assistant Town Clerk of Western Division, explained that garbage management at the slaughter slab is handled by a contracted service provider, Home Clean, which is required to clean the facility every two to three days. He acknowledged the current poor state of the facility and assured that renovations, including fencing, are planned for this financial year, with further improvements scheduled for the next financial year.

Municipal authorities urge swift action to restore and maintain hygiene at Kagogo slaughter slab, ensuring the health and safety of the community.
