Rukungiri municipal authorities have taken a significant step to enhance the safety of schoolchildren by erecting two children-crossing road signs at Nyakibale Lower Primary School and Immaculate Heart Corner.

This initiative aims to address the frequent accidents caused by speeding and reckless driving in these areas, which have tragically claimed lives, particularly among students attending Nyakibale Lower Primary School, Immaculate Heart, and Nyakibale Upper Primary School.

Mayor Charles Makulu emphasized the urgency of reducing accidents involving children crossing busy roads amidst speeding vehicles. He highlighted the annual toll of at least two lives lost at this corner, emphasizing the need for proactive measures. Enhanced enforcement of road traffic regulations will target motorists who disregard safety, thereby preventing avoidable accidents. Makulu urged parents to prioritize their children’s safety by ensuring they wear helmets while riding motorcycles (Boda boda).

Furthermore, Makulu called upon teachers to educate students about road signage, emphasizing the importance of all road users being vigilant in understanding and adhering to these signs. Alfred Katabazi, the Principal Education Officer of Rukungiri municipality, reiterated the significance of this initiative in reducing road accidents involving schoolchildren. He observed children’s vulnerability to accidents, particularly while crossing roads, and emphasized the necessity for strict compliance with safety regulations to mitigate the alarming statistics of road incidents.

Byarugaba Henry, the Headteacher of Nyakibale Lower Primary School, expressed concern over the frequent accidents targeting children crossing the road. He emphasized the economic impact of these accidents, lamenting the loss of lives and injuries incurred. Henry commended Mayor Makulu for his proactive approach in advocating for the installation of road signs, which he believes will significantly contribute to reducing accidents.

Overall, community leaders are urged to collaborate in promoting the usage of road signs to enhance the safety of children. This collective effort aims to mitigate the risks children face while navigating busy roads, ultimately safeguarding their well-being.
